چکیده

20 Millions of women use hormonal contraception and it has been suggested that such use may alter 21 mate preferences. To examine the impact of oral contraceptive (pill) use on preferences, we 22 tested for within-subject changes in preferences for masculine faces in women initiating pill use. 23 Between two sessions, initiation of pill use significantly decreased women’s preferences for male 24 facial masculinity but did not influence preferences for same-sex faces. To test whether altered 25 preference during pill use influences actual partner choice, we examined facial characteristics in 26 170 age-matched male partners of women who reported having either been using or not using the 27 pill when the partnership was formed. Both facial measurements and perceptual judgements 28 demonstrated that partners of women who used the pill during mate choice have less masculine 29 faces than partners of women who did not use hormonal contraception at this time. Our data (A) 30 provide the first experimental evidence that initiation of pill use in women causes changes in 31 facial preferences and (B) documents downstream effects of these changes on real-life partner 32 selection. Given that hormonal contraceptive use is widespread, effects of pill use on the 33 processes of partner formation have important implications for relationship stability and may 34 have other biologically relevant consequences. 35

Gaze properties of women judging the attractiveness of masculine and feminine male faces.

Most studies of female facial masculinity preference have relied upon self-reported preference, with participants selecting or rating the attractiveness of faces that differ in masculinity. However, researchers have not established a consensus as to whether women's general preference is for male faces that are masculine or feminine, and several studies have indicated that women prefer neither. ...

Mate-preference drives mate-choice: Men’s self-rated masculinity predicts their female partner’s preference for masculinity

Women who rate their male partner as more masculine tend to prefer more masculine faces. However, it is unclear whether a preference for masculinity causes women to select masculine partners, or to perceive their current partner as more masculine. By incorporating multiple measures of male masculinity, we establish that women’s preference for facial masculinity in short-term partners is correla...

Women's pathogen disgust predicting preference for facial masculinity may be specific to age and study design

a r t i c l e i n f o Facial masculinity in men is thought to be an indicator of good health. Consistent with this idea, previous research has found a positive association between pathogen avoidance (disgust sensitivity) and preference for facial masculinity. However, previous studies are mostly based on young adult participants and targets, using forced-choice preference measures; this begs th...

Women’s Preferences for Men’s Facial Masculinity: Trade-Off Accounts Revisited

Studies on mate preferences have demonstrated that women’s perception of male attractiveness is sensitive to men’s facial masculinity, and that women’s preferences for facial masculinity are subject to individual differences, such as own condition. These individual differences have been linked to potential tradeoffs that women face given the hypothesized benefits and costs that masculinity may ...
